Otto Maja’s artistic practice is rooted in a long history of creating art in public spaces, where he developed a distinctive simple visual language built around bold imagery, strong composition, and instantly recognizable characters. This foundation continues to inform his work today, while his focus has increasingly shifted strongly towards contemporary painting.

Known for his large-scale murals, Maja often works with simplified and highly refined black and white characters that communicate directly and clearly within architectural environments. In his paintings, however, the process becomes more exploratory. Layers of texture, intricate details, and unexpected visual discoveries emerge through material experimentation from dried up brushes to old chassis paint. The act of painting itself plays a central role, with curiosity and material exploration guiding each work toward its unpredictable final form.

While his paintings retain the immediacy and visual confidence of his early years, they reveal an increasingly nuanced approach to color, surface, and composition. Balancing control with spontaneity, Maja creates richly detailed works that reward close observation and invite multiple interpretations.

Born in Helsinki in 1987, Otto Maja is a Finnish contemporary artist whose work has been exhibited in museums and institutions including the Pori Art Museum and other numerous exhibitions throughout Finland and internationally. Having established his reputation through work in the public realm allongside as a commercial artist, creating commissioned projects for clients including Microsoft, Flow Festival, and Paulig.

His ability to move seamlessly between public art, commercial commissions, and contemporary painting reflects the versatility of his visual language and creative approach.
