⬤Otto Maja: HAPPY ENDING

30.7. – 28.8.
Vernissage Thursday 30.7 18:00 >

Otto Maja’s artistic practice is rooted in a long history of creating art in public spaces, where he developed a distinctive simple visual language built around bold imagery, strong composition, and instantly recognizable characters.

This foundation continues to inform his work today, while his focus has increasingly shifted strongly towards contemporary painting.

Known for his large-scale murals, Maja often works with simplified and highly refined black and white characters that communicate directly and clearly within architectural environments. In his paintings, however, the process becomes more exploratory. Layers of texture, intricate details, and unexpected visual discoveries emerge through material experimentation from dried up brushes to old chassis paint. The act of painting itself plays a central role, with curiosity and material exploration guiding each work toward its unpredictable final form.

While his paintings retain the immediacy and visual confidence of his early years, they reveal an increasingly nuanced approach to color, surface, and composition. Balancing control with spontaneity, Maja creates richly detailed works that reward close observation and invite multiple interpretations.

Born in Helsinki in 1987, Otto Maja is a Finnish contemporary artist whose work has been exhibited in museums and institutions including the Pori Art Museum and other numerous exhibitions throughout Finland and internationally. Having established his reputation through work in the public realm allongside as a commercial artist, creating commissioned projects for clients including Microsoft, Flow Festival, and Paulig.

His ability to move seamlessly between public art, commercial commissions, and contemporary painting reflects the versatility of his visual language and creative approach.

⬤Felipe Vásconez: Second movement: TO BURN THE BRIDGES

For this second movement, TO BURN THE BRIDGES, conceived not as a sequel, but as a progression, the artist presents a pictorial selection addressing the causes of diasporas and exiles, reflecting on the idea of return while avoiding generalizations. Through this, the artworks seek deep conversations about the radical idea of severing ties with one’s place of origin, considering that throughout life we always leave something behind— whether gaining independence from our parents, moving to the next block, or relocating to the other side of the planet. This flow of lives is as ancient as the oceans. Yet, this journey is not merely geographical; in some cases, it is profoundly marked by far more complex causes: silent wars, drug trafficking, guerrilla conflict, the climate crisis, extractivism, and the shadow of corruption that forces exile. It is here that memory becomes baggage, used to reconstruct a sense of belonging in an almost unknown territory, while the return itself remains uncertain.

The first movement: SOLITUDE held on 02-29 April 2026 at LUCKAN-HELSINKI Where the artist presented a dialogue between the human body, space and the gaze on the isolation that digital media is producing. On a personal note, the artist spoke thought this project about his own experience of migration, a fracture that redefine his relationship with the self and environment.

“Art, like humans, struggles between two opposite forces that attract it: one is the beauty of absolute serenity; the other, the fascination of the abyss”

Felipe Vásconez (b. 1995, Ecuador) is a visual artist based in Helsinki, working with drawing, painting, and various printmaking techniques. Felipe’s work depicts an imaginative drift that blurs the distinction between everyday life, emotions, and method. Much of his inspiration comes from literature, which has charged his work with metaphors, irony, and sarcasm. Felipe always carries a notebook and drawing tools, as most of his ideas are born through drawing. Migration has inspired scenarios that evoke the overarching themes of nostalgia, ego, loneliness, and memory. Drawing is for him a daily ritual: “My drawings are a kind of introspective research executed in different drawing media, a recurring attempt to portray my inner world.”

He has undertaken art studies at the University of the Arts and ITAE in Ecuador. Recent exhibitions include his participation at “Rural Art Market” by Pubblica_lab IT, Albeit in Auslagen AT, (Solo exhibition) at Myymälä2, Finland.
