Avajaiset 03.05. Klo 17-19!

Toukokuun näyttelykokonaisuudessa “Valokuvatarinoita” yhdistyy nimensäkin mukaisesti valokuva ja tarinallisuus. Eteisgalleriassa esillä Plus Collectiven organisoimat kaksi näyttelyä, jotka käsittelevät feminismiä ja lähisuhdeväkivaltaa. Kun kuljet peremmälle Olohuonetta, pääset matkustamaan 1960-1980 lukujen New Yorkiin Bettina Cironen valokuvien parissa. Kolmas näyttelyjärjestäjämme, Diakonissalaitoksen ja Filantropia ry:n Partnering for Change -hanke, kutsuu sinut tutustumaan Nigeriaan taiteen ja valokuvien kautta.

May Exhibitions 03.05.2024-26.05.2024 at the gallery of Vapaakaupunki tell stories through photography. The exhibitions at the entrance hall by Plus Collective deal with the topic of feminism and domestic violence. As you move forward you will come across photographs by Bettina Circone from 1960-1980’s New York. The final exhibition is part of Partnering for Change -project and it presents Nigeria through art and photographs.

Perspektiivi
Tervetuloa näyttelyymme; Perspective. Olemme ryhmä lukiolaistyttöjä, jotka ovat vanginneet ja ilmaisseet henkilökohtaisia kokemuksiamme ja mielipiteitämme feminismistä ja siitä, miksi sillä on väliä täällä seinällä olevien esineiden kautta.
Omien teoksiemme ohella olemme pyytäneet myös muita koulumme tyttöjä osallistumaan tähän projektiin ja jakamaan näkemyksensä; olemme kaikki eri taustoista, mutta yhdessä ajamme yhteistä asiaa. Feminismi.

Näyttelymme kautta haluamme tarjota henkilökohtaisemman lähestymistavan tyttöjen elämään, jotka elävät mukavasti vakaassa ja kehittyneessä yhteiskunnassa. Haluamme korostaa, että kaikki lähestymistavat ja näkemykset ovat omalla tavallaan päteviä, ja teemme sen esittelemällä henkilökohtaisia esineitä tai tapahtumia ja ilmaisemalla jälkimmäisten kautta, miksi feminismillä on merkitystä.

Perspective
Welcome to our exhibition; Perspective. We are a group of highschool girls who have captured and expressed our personal experience and opinions on feminism and why it matters through the objects displayed on the wall here. Along with our works, we have also asked other girls from our school to contribute to this project and share their point of view; all of us are from different backgrounds but together; we argue for a joint cause. Feminism.

Through our exhibition we wish to offer a more personal approach as girls living comfortably in a stable and developed society. We want to highlight that all approaches and views are valid in their own way and do so through presenting personal objects or events and through the latter expressing why feminism matters.

LOVE NOTES
A story of domestic violence from the happiest country in the world, Finland. “Do you think I am to blame for this?”
Nita asked me this question many times during the last months.

She has been living in an abusive relationship for almost four years, since the birth of her two kids.
This story begins when Nita decided to break-up with her abusive boyfriend and focusses on the consequences that the violence has left in her. The story takes place in Finland, a country known as the happiest country in the world but that has the unfortunate second place in EU for the highest percentage of cases of domestic violence.

Avajaisissa Plus Collective esittelee AinoAid™️ palvelun, joka on keskusteleva chatbot sekä tietopankki, joka on koulutettu palvelemaan heitä, jotka haluavat keskustella haasteista ihmissuhteissaan tai tietää lähisuhdeväkivallasta. AinoAid™️ toimii myös ammattilaisten tukena parempaan asiakaskohtaamiseen ja palveluun. Palvelu julkaistaan 23.4. Suomessa.

Plus Collective will present AinoAid™️ at the vernissage which is a conversational chatbot and information bank trained to serve those who want to discuss challenges in their relationships or know about intimate partner violence. AinoAid™️ also works as a support for professionals for better customer interaction and service.

■ Bettina Cirone: Näkymä New Yorkiin

Bettina Cirone: Näkymä New Yorkiin, 1960-1980 esittelee yhdysvaltalaisen Bettina Cironen (s.1933) valokuvia 1960-1980 -lukujen New Yorkista. Huippumallina työskennellyt Cirone siirtyi kameran taakse vuonna 1970. Hänen valokuvaajauransa kesti 40 vuotta, jona aikana Cirone kuvasi niin arkkitehtuuria, urheilua kuin muotiakin; hän on myös tallentanut kuviinsa aikakauden julkkiksia. Hän oli Salvador Dalìn muusa, tunsi läheisesti Andy Warholin ja toimi Kennedyn ja Trumpin perheiden valokuvaajana. Cironen valokuvia on julkaistu laajalti niin Yhdysvalloissa kuin Euroopassakin. Hänen kuviaan on ilmestynyt muun muassa sellaisissa lehdissä kuin the New York Times, Vanity Fair, National Geographic, Jet, Hola ja Oggi.

Bettina Cirone: Aperture on New York City, 1960-1980 presents Bettina Cirone’s (b. 1933) photographs of her native New York during the 1960s-1980s. Cirone’s successful 10-year career as a top fashion model was followed by a 40-year career in photography during which she worked as an architecture, sports, fashion, and celebrity photographer. Cirone, who was the muse of Salvador Dali and friend of Andy Warhol, also worked as the photographer of the Kennedy and Trump families. Cirone’s photographs appeared in all major newspapers and magazines not only in the United States but also abroad, including the New York Times, Vanity Fair, National Geographic, Jet, Hola, and Oggi.

■ Näkökulmia Nigeriaan

Diakonissalaitoksen ja Filantropia ry:n Partnering for Change -hanke kutsuu sinut tutustumaan Nigeriaan taiteen ja valokuvien kautta. Näyttely tuo esiin Afrikan suurimpiin kuuluvan talousjätin mahdollisuuksia ja saavutuksia. Näyttelyssä on esillä ASIRI Magazinen, Rami Kankaan, Dotun Popoolan, Ife Olowun ja Chess in Slums African teoksia.

Nigeria on paitsi Afrikan väkirikkain maa, myös kulttuurin aarreaitta. Maan afrobeat-artistit, kuten Wizkidi, Burna Boy ja Tiwa Savage, ovat tehneet vaikuttavan nousun maailmanlaajuisille soittolistoille. Nollywood tuottaa vuosittain enemmän kuin Hollywoodissa tehdään. Myös Nigerian start-up skene on maailmankuulu. Tämän näyttelyn on tuottanut ja kuratoinut Art for Business, joka käyttää taidetta Afrikan maiden liiketoimintamahdollisuuksista viestimiseen.

Partnering for Change on Diakonissalaitoksen ja Filantropia ry:n hanke. Sen tavoitteina on tarjota suomalaisille yrityksille mahdollisuuksia oppia Afrikan maiden liiketoimintapotentiaalista sekä tuoda monipuolisesti esiin Afrikan maiden todellisuuksia. Hanketta rahoittaa Suomen ulkoministeriö.

Nigeria Re-envisioned
Partnering for Change (PARC) is pleased to present these images of Nigeria curated to convey the potential, opportunity and achievements contained in one of Africa’s largest economies. The creatives on display include ASIRI Magazine, Rami Kangas, Dotun Popoola, Ife Olowu and Chess in Slums Africa.

Nigeria doesn’t just boast a large population but is endowed with cultural assets. From its entrepreneurial prowess that took on the global start-up scene by force to the bustling Afro-beat scene that has seen the impressive rise of creatives like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage to the global stage! And lastly, lets not forget the world’s second-largest film industry, dubbed Nollywood, which produces more than 2,000 movies each year. (Impressive, right!)

This exhibition is produced and curated by Art for Business, a platform that uses creative arts to inform, educate and shed light on emerging economies. Partnering for Change is a project of the Deaconess Foundation and Filantropia ry. As part of its remit, PARC offers opportunities for Finnish businesses to learn about the business potential of African countries and bring out the diverse realities African countries hold. The project is funded by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

IFE OLOWU
Ifeoluwa Oluwaseun Olowu is a visual artist based in Lagos, Nigeria, whose new creative development of bringing his art to life through Augmented Reality (AR) is progressively becoming a global desire and recognition, including a feature on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers series. With a deep passion for art and a knack for captivating designs and prints, Ifeoluwa has pushed the boundaries of traditional art forms to create a mesmerizing blend of digital and physical experiences that bring his paintings to life. In doing so, he seeks to foster a deeper connection between the creator and the viewer, allowing
audiences to glimpse the artist’s mind.

DOTUN POPOOLA
Dotun Popoola is a contemporary Nigerian artist (sculptor) who specializes in synergistic metal sculpting. He creates artwork from discarded scrap metals, transforming trash into treasures, rubbish into rubies, and waste into wealth—repurposing waste that threatens the ecosystem.

Dotun Popoola’s artistic prowess has earned him global recognition, with his work being featured in over 100 publications worldwide. His artistic practice is about creating visually appealing piecesand using art as a catalyst for change and a tool for sociocultural review. He addresses pressing issues such as waste management and conservation, infrastructural decay, and the need to repurpose, recycle, and reuse waste that mars our environment and threatens the ecosystem.

He was featured in the West Africa International Art Fair “ARTX Lagos” in 2018, represented Nigeria at the maiden scrap art exhibition in Souq Waqif Qatar in 2019, and participated in the Global Art Festival in Gujarat, India, in 2020 and Coexistence in Turkey in 2021.
