Hollywoodin vääristyneistä kauneusihanteista ideansa ammentava The Substance (2024) on viime vuosien iljettävimpiä, mutta hienoimpia Body-horror -kauhugenren edustajia ja täysin ansaitusti. Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) on 50 ikävuotta lähentelevä elokuvatähti, joka saa eräänä päivänä studiopomolta kuulla olevansa liian vanha jatkaakseen alalla. Examining Hollywood’s disfigured beauty standards, The Substance (2024) is one of the most gruesome but finest representatives of the body horror genre in recent years, and deservedly so. Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is a moviestar approaching 50 years of age, who one day receives an announcement from a studio boss that she is too old to continue in the industry. However, Elisabeth is given the opportunity to become part of an experiment of a drug called Substance, which will make her a younger, better version of herself. The only rule is that the drug use must stay in balance. The longer Elisabeth stays in the body of her younger self, the more terrible the consequences will be in her own body. The Substance takes the pursuit of beauty to the extreme level and is a clever take on Hollywood’s beauty double-standards. Demi Moore, who received her first Academy Award nomination of her career, gives arguably the most unforgettable performance of her career in the film.

Film screenings free of charge at Vapaakaupunki on Wednesdays starting at 7 pm. Vapaakaupuni is located on the second floor of Red. Remember to bring your own tasty movie treats.

Note that the screening of The Substance on 29th April will exceptionally start at 7:15 pm due to the opening of the exhibition.
