Leffaillat: The Craft (1996)

The Craft (1996) edustaa teinikauhun alagenreä parhaimmillaan ja on klassikko-franchaisiksi muodostuneen Screamin (1996) ohella toinen 1990-luvun lopun teinikauhun aallon käynnistäjiä. Sarah (Robin Tunney) aloittaa opinnot uudessa katolisessa koulussa ja kokee heti vaikeuksia sopeutua joukkoon, kunnes ystävystyy myöskin ulkopuolelle jääneen outona pidetyn tyttöporukan kanssa. Yhdessä he oppivat noituuden salat ja käyttävät kykyjään miten haluavat. Kaikella on kuitenkin hintansa. Elokuvassa nuoret noidat käyttävät taikojaan kohottaakseen statustaan koulun hierarkiassa, jossa kauneus ja suosio ovat valtaa. Täten The Craft voidaan nähdä myös kritiikkinä kauneusihanteiden yhteydellä joukkoon kuulumiselle ja on siksi erinomainen elokuva avaamaan huhtikuun Young & Beautiful -esityssarjan

The Craft (1996) represents the sub-genre of teen horror at its best and beside Scream (1996), it was also another pioneer in the new coming of sub-genre in the 90s. Sarah (Robin Tinney) is starting a new school at St. Benedict’s Academy and feels being outcast until finding friendhood with another outcast girl group. Together they learn the secrets of witchcraft and use their powers as they want, until they discover everything has its price. In the film, young witches are using their magic to lift up their status at schools hierarchy where beauty and being popular is power. So, you could see The Craft as a critic for beauty standards as part of your status. For this reason, it’s also a great film to open April’s Young & Beautiful -film night programme.

April’s films will immerse you in the fascinating world of beauty and eternal youth. The Young & Beautiful series explores how the pursuit of youth and the pressures created by beauty standards go to extremes and are ultimately unleashed in ways familiar from horror films.

Film screenings free of charge at Vapaakaupunki on Wednesdays starting at 7 pm. Vapaakaupuni is located on the second floor of Red. Remember to bring your own tasty movie treats.

Note that the screening of The Substance on 29th April will exceptionally start at 7:15 pm due to the opening of the exhibition.
